Action Comics #1 in 1938 and 2011: Up, Up, and Away – Podcast Lecture
In 1938 Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s landmark creation, Superman, made his début in Action Comics #1. In 2011, DC Comics -owners of Superman- relaunched their entire line of comic books in an event called the New 52 which saw classic titles rebooted back to their first issue – Action Comics was no different. In this episode of the American Studies and History podcast we will delve below the surface of these two books in order to discover what they tell us about the world we live in and how it has changed since the era of the Great Depression. Comic books are the an odd choice for a historic source – they don’t tell us much about the past in the traditional sense but they do give us some interesting insights, showing us how certain assumptions we have taken for granted have been transformed. With Superman’s new movie, The Man of Steel, set to take the world by storm now is the perfect time to discover the hidden depths of Action Comics #1, in its original and new incarnation.
