“Students studying History, International Relations, and Politics at Coventry University have developed a unique gaming experience that is designed to raise awareness about the critical situation in South America’s rain forests – and the plight faced by many of the region’s Indigenous communities.
The 8-Bit Rain Forest was developed in collaboration with Adroaldo Fidelis of the Indigenous Kaingáng people (and Brazil’s National Indigenous Federation) under the supervision of Dr. Darren R. Reid of Coventry University. The resultant game draws on the timeless aesthetic of classic video-games to deliver a powerful message about the health of the rain forest – and its impact upon the rest of the world.
“This project is a really exciting collaboration”, said Dr. Reid, “it was a chance for my students to work across disciplinary and cultural boundaries, learning from an Indigenous collaborator, and working to develop an artefact that we can use to raise awareness about the critical situation in the forest.”
The game draws upon mechanics familiar to any 2D Zelda or Pokemon fan to deliver Indigenous knowledge alongside critical insight into some of the key issues that are leading deforestation – and their impact on Brazil’s 350 distinct Indigenous societies.
It is compatible with all modern computers and smart devices, providing a byte-sized experience that explores a global problem.
Play on PC, Mac, Iphone, IOS, Android, Tablet, Ipad.”
