Opportunities appear at the most unexpected times.  As I was working towards the completion of my forthcoming book, I was given the chance to travel to the other end of the continent and begin work with an indigenous community in southern Brazil.  It was unexpected and wonderful.  The Kaingang people were so generous, sharing their stories with me, and giving me a wonderful insight into their culture and history.  I also had the opportunity to begin working with their allies, the amazing scholars who are working with the community to deepen their access to higher education. As a result, I was able to produce a short documentary. Keepers of the Forest was not a film I planned to make – I barely had any equipment with me, and almost no time. What challenge! But I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity. It was the first step on a much longer journey, working with the Kaingang and learning about their amazing culture.
